The Dark Is Rising
Watch for the Greenwitch by [archiveofourown.org profile] Selden (2,448 words). I never did manage to do my Dark Is Rising re-read this year, but at least there was fic. A different turn for Jane, this. (and a bonus delight to see [livejournal.com profile] sharp_teeth mentioned in the notes)
In the light from the bonfire the Greenwitch rose up, tall and ragged against the sky, like something from long ago. Not the fine past of the grail, of long spears and iron, thorny, intricate poetry and patterns. Not even the past, thought Jane, of neat sharp flints laid out on red velvet under museum lights, axes and arrowheads. Something older, like rough rock, the rings of yellow lichen spreading out through the years like ripples from a stone thrown into still water.

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy, windy, and cool.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 12/28/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

This poem is spillover from the October 3, 2025 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] mama_kestrel and [personal profile] see_also_friend. It also fills the "There are many flavors of outcasts here." square in my 10-1-23 card for the Fall Fest Bingo. This poem has been sponsored by a pool with [personal profile] fuzzyred. The City That Refused to Stay Dying

This Indiana city is no longer defined by what it lost, but by what its residents are building today.

Instead of waiting for a master plan or a single catalytic investment, Keen began assembling homes and vacant parcels one by one. He helped launch the Portage Midtown Initiative and the South Bend GreenHouse, restored neglected homes, cultivated community gardens, and supported local builders learning to tackle small projects themselves. He often refers to these lots collectively as his “farm.”

This approach can work in many cities.

To Die But Once

To Die But Once (Maisie Dobbs #14)To Die But Once by Jacqueline Winspear

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

After reading this, knowing I missed a few I went back to look. Shockingly I had only missed 2 but I also see I was starting to tire of the series and I had hated book 11. It wasn't too hard to pick back up but I had a lot of the same issues with this as I did with books 8-11. It's becoming less and less about the mystery and more about Maisie's personal drama.

In fact, a lot of time the mystery was forgotten in lieu of dealing with the beginnings of WWII. Naturally given the time period this is set in and that both Maisie and Billy were in WWI, I expected this to eventually come in. And it takes over this story to the point I felt like Winspear really wanted to write about what was happening in Britain during the beginning of the war (This begins with the fall of Paris and Dunkirk) but didn't want to do the heavy lifting of creating all new characters and make us invest in them when she had ready made characters we already know.

So the mystery, one of Maisie's friends wants her to find his son, Joe who had disappeared. He was a young man, apprentice painter whose boss's company was tapped by the military to paint air force bases with fire retardant paint in case they're bombed. He had headaches and personality changes before he disappeared.

But the real story is Billy's son at Dunkirk and his younger son wanting to become a RAF plane mechanic and Priscilla's boy also in France and her underaged son running off with his wealthy friend in his friend's father's sailboat to help evacuate people from Dunkirk. Will they live? Are they going to come home? Will they be wounded.

The other big part of the story was Anna, the orphan girl Maisie is taking care of (or I should say parents are) who now has measles and there is the whole threat of Maisie having to give her up because widows can't have orphaned kids.

The mystery felt like an afterthought and ultimately unsatisfying.

My favorite thing about birthdays is emotional blackmail, so my birthday wish is you watch the pilot for Interview With The Vampire.

If you already have, my wish is you post about your Christmas tree if you have one. I'd love to hear about your favorite decoration - especially if it's old or you made it as a kid! - see a picture even.

Love y'all ❤️

IV saline without infusion pump; childhood fevers

I'm hoping these are straightforward questions, but I couldn't find a way to word the first to get any relevant results in web searches, and the second got weird on me.

The context is a civilian with extensive field-medic-style training providing off-the-books, in-home medical/supportive care to a preteen who is ill with a viral* fever-inducing illness. (* Viral seems easier; but bacterial is possible if necessary.) The setting is the modern-day (or at least vaguely post-2010) United States.

1. Is it feasible to administer intravenous (IV) saline without an infusion pump? (I've been assuming it is but want to double-check.)

cut for IV details )

2. Is there a point at which a childhood (viral) fever is dangerous?

Many thanks!

Progressing in the language journey (Spanish)

For a year and a half now, I've been (lightly) learning Spanish, mainly with Duolingo, Anki, and watching a daily novelita. Sometimes I try and read Spanish fanfics. I must say, I learned a lot in that time period, though I mainly learnt understanding language, not speaking or writing it. I started with a textbook a few days ago, which will hopefully help me with the latter.

Nevertheless, I see progress all around. I've recently restarted a rewatch of Cable Girls with original audio and Spanish subs, and I can mostly understand it! I'm so happy. I remember watching the series a few years ago. It was my first experience watching a Spanish show. I was intrigued by the language but understood nothing, did a first attempt at learning with Duolingo, but it didn't work out. I'm so happy that I've now reached a level where I can mostly understand a TV series now!

Are you learning a language now? Or do you know other languages beside your mother tongue?
