Why this piece is awesome: Aaaand, it's the inevitable Klimt kiss portrait of Ilya and Shane, and very nicely done, too! I like the echoes of their team uniform colours in their robes.

What you eat could decide the planet’s future

What we put on our plates may matter more for the climate than we realize. Researchers found that most people, especially in wealthy countries, are exceeding a “food emissions budget” needed to keep global warming below 2°C. Beef alone accounts for nearly half of food-related emissions in Canada. Small changes—less waste, smaller portions, and fewer steaks—could add up to a big climate win.

Birdfeeding

Today is partly cloudy and mild.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 12/24/25 -- We hacked up most of the remaining brushpile in the parking lot, and some of the older one by the driveway, feeding those into the chipper.

EDIT 12/24/25 -- We moved the new mulch to the mulch pile.

EDIT 12/24/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.  As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

This week's word is...
blanket

How to play: Find the word in any WIP and comment with the sentence containing it. Just the one, ideally! The less context, the more hilarious & interesting it can be.

Rules:
- All fandoms, all ships, all writers welcome
- Give a head's up for disturbing/distressing content
- If you share a sentence, please read some left by other writers and drop at least one person a comment. (If you leave the first comment, thanks for starting us off, and we hope you'll pop back around later!)

Posting a little early this week because of Christmas Eve! I'll be with family this afternoon.

Frosted grass, being a hater, sleeves

We got a cold snap last night and a few millimeters of snow. It looks like the grass is coated in powdered sugar. Downstairs is still quite warm - 17° in the kitchen at lunchtime - but after I fed the cats at 7:00 am I went back to bed with a wool sweater on and I never got hot enough to take it off.

It's so nice to see Wax enjoying her fandom so much. She's had two objectively bad TV shows that she was super fannish about since the last time I had a fandom. I do like IWTV enough to get that excited about, but it still wouldn't be like her fandoms (911 and Roswell before that) because I can't get that into reading it (I have read some, but I didn't settle in) and wouldn't be able to write it.

The last fandom I was able to get into reading was Stranger Things 4 Steve/Eddie a couple of years ago, but that was also not quite the full fannish experience, because I wasn't as into the canon. I look over at her and see her chatting with people and reading furiously, and I remember that, and feel happy for her... but sad for myself.

She's even excited about Heated Rivalry - and I am too! But not nearly as much. I guess it feels more like I'm enjoying it as a member of slash fandom, and I'm keeping abreast of what's happening and getting the references, but, as I said once before... I am enjoying the show, which is good and well made, without really liking the characters very much, or the plot.

I was talking to Wax about this, and the absence of uncritical joy that I used to engage with in my 20s, and she diagnosed that I need to "open up my hating heart". I'm hating a lot more than I did when I was younger, it's true. The thing is that I don't know how to do that.

Anyway... I'm working on the second of the three triplet sweaters now, after Wax knitted most of the body of it. I finished the first sweater, after having to knit the first sleeve entirely twice - or rather knitting to the cuff beffore starting over - and now the same thing has happened with the second sweater. It's boring stockinette though, unlike the first sweater, and with very black yarn, so in order to count stitches and decreases I have to have a lamp pointing at it. Sigh.

Merry Christmas!

Everyone needs contact comfort sometimes. Not everyone has ample opportunities for this in facetime. So here is a chance for a cuddle party in cyberspace. Virtual cuddling can help people feel better.

We have a cuddle room that comes with fort cushions, fort frames, sheets for draping, and a weighted blanket. A nest full of colorful egg pillows sits in one corner. There is a basket of grooming brushes, hairbrushes, and styling combs. A bin holds textured pillows. There is a big basket of craft supplies along with art markers, coloring pages, and blank paper. The kitchen has a popcorn machine. Labels are available to mark dietary needs, recipe ingredients, and level of spiciness. Here is the bathroom, open to everyone. There is a lawn tent and an outdoor hot tub. Bathers should post a sign for nude or clothed activity. Come snuggle up!

I don't talk about work a whole lot, mostly because I can't, per our policy lol. It's nothing super fancy or important, but it has a lot of customer information so we can't really talk about it, just that I work for a call center company.

A few months ago I got moved from Quality Assurance to Back-Office, which does emails, chat and will occasionally take calls. It was a pretty big transition because I lost a dollar and some change in pay and I no longer get holiday pay like I did before being in QA. On top of that, our work decided on a mandatory reduction of hours so I went down from 40 a week to 24, on top of having to now pay more for insurance through work, which is the only insurance I can afford.

Last week I was told by my manager that I would be undergoing training for the next two weeks starting this past Monday. Not too thrilled about it since it means I'll likely be moved from Back-Office to solely taking calls for this department we're being trained on. But the plus side is, because of training and using PTO for Christmas Day and New Year's Day, I'll get a solid 40 hours per week for the next two weeks, which I'm not going to complain about considering my cut hours the last few weeks.

No idea what my hours will be like after training. I'll have to go through the nesting process of taking calls, so I might get another week, at least, of 40 hours. Hopefully this means my hours will go back to normal. Blegh.

I shall be working tomorrow (Christmas Eve) and need to leave the house at about 8.30am on Christmas Day, so I don't have a lot of time for preparation... but there's always time to squeeze in a little writing with a notebook balanced on top of the saucepan while preparing sprouts and packet noodles for supper, as I have just demonstrated :-P
(Admittedly it was about a sentence and a half, but I do intend to finish that sentence tonight, honest guv...)

Does genius burn for you today, Jos and Joes?
