The event is called Rewrite A Fic. It's a multifandom event that gives you eleven months to rewrite a fic you've written before. The event rules are that the work written has to be yours originally, the fic you are rewriting has to be at least 1 1/2 years old, and using generative AI for the fic is strictly prohibited. The length of the fic doesn't matter. There are no content restrictions, but the use of proper content warnings is required when posting the work.

See full comm details, including how to post to the comm and how to add to the comm's AO3 Collection at rewrite_a_fic on DW.

petra: Married vampires sitting next to each other, not touching (IWTV - Lesbian Bed Death)
[personal profile] petra
I am going through my traditional "How many fests and challenges can I imagine in a week?"

I don't think I'm doing Psychic Wolves this year.

On the other hand, Té suggested a fest of blorbos touching the Rockstar Lestat and now I want it.

[personal profile] hannah points out that, if we want to know what Tom Cruise's Rockstar Lestat would have looked like, we have but to consult this video of Cruise in a jukebox musical singing "Pour Some Sugar On Me."

...it's been a really long time since I was sexually attracted to Tom Cruise, but apparently [personal profile] hannah has the secret sauce.

Also, I now want vampires:

+ the New Burbage Festival (OMG DARREN NICHOLS) (Slings & Arrows)

+ on G-ERTI (they can only fly at night) (Cabin Pressure)

+ working for Oracle (Birds of Prey and a half)

+ visiting Chicago in the era of the Mountie (experimental hair for all who will) (due South)

+ what-ho'ing Bertram Wilberforce Wooster

+ in the world of the Five Gods (hello, is this The Bastard, I have your king shit devoté on hold) (Chalion)

+ dealing with the Light and the Dark, and falling somewhere between (Dark is Rising)

+ eating hockey players

+ being in the future and baffling Aral Vorkosigan with being a) not soldiers and b) hot AT THE SAME TIME (Vorkosigan Saga)

+ and Muppets (Lestat as lone "human"?)

+ in Narnia (Aslan would shit a lit. brick)

+ becoming Black Ribboners (time for a sing-song around the harmonium! NOT LIKE THAT, LESTAT) (Discworld)

+ in Night Vale (it's Tuesday)

+ mad, in a coma, AND back in time -- the Life on Mars trifecta -- let's see Lestat trying to eat Gene Hunt

+ calling Car Talk

+ hiring Neal Caffrey to do a spot of forgery (White Collar)

+ with war horses who correspond with Copenhagen and Marengo, gaily (Warhorses of Letters)

+ fit as a fiddle and ready for love (would they love or loathe Lockwood and Lamont?) (Singin' in the Rain)

+ come on Darth Vader gold glitter looks Great on you

+ choosing the lesser of two weevils (Aubreyad)

+ ...okay i just died a little over quentin coldwater fanboying the vampire lestat (The Magicians)

+ side-eyeing and being side-eyed by Magneto (X-Men)

+ and I had a good belly laugh at Lestat meeting Felix Harrowgate: battle of the asshole first-person narrators who think they are special

+ Zaphod! Beeblebrox! would so get it on with Lestat! (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

+ How do you reckon vampires get on with thalergy? Let's Find Out (The Locked Tomb)

+ How do you reckon vampires get on with constructs? Send Lestat to Preservation! (Murderbot)

+ okay hear me out Grantaire is weak for opinionated blonds but what if he met The Wrong One (Les Misérables)

+ it's already a doctor who episode innit but let's get some harkness up in this joint

+ Awful Sykes has a crush and so does Torquil (Archer's Goon)

+ RIVERS OF LONDON which body of water can we blame everyone on

+ Last Week Tonight: Our main story concerns The "Vampire" Lestat (of course John does quote fingers)

+ Jacky Faber met our hero at some point in her meanderings. I bet they shared a stage.

+ James Flint. BWAHAHAHA. WOULD HIT THAT. (Black Sails)

+ Falsettos: writes. itself. Louis IS the gay plague.

+ did you ever want to see Lestat fuck a muppet wearing leather? I DO I DO (Farscape)

+ truly Julian Bashir needs his not-boyfriend to run interference or he's gonna get eaten (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)

+ and then I hit Battlestar Galactica (reboot) which seems like a Terrible place to be a vampire but they'd have fun eating Gaius

+ Pern! is in the future! it can have Vampires if it wants 'em! Weirdest Harper Ever.

+ What happens with MCU? I couldn't begin to tell you. But there must be a clever answer.

+ Community: the study group goes to a concert and they all crush, each in their own way. Annie gets... scary.

+ I very much want Ray Person singing The Vampire Lestat across Iraq, but given the givens it makes me want to cry right now. (Generation: Kill, RIP James Ransone)

+ Scott & Bailey -- the teenage girls and Aunt Rachel bond over their crushes

+ Pamela Dean's Tam Lin has immortals. I want to see them emoting at Rice's.

+ And our wailing wonder, Lestat de Lioncourt. // Why, thank you, Sandi. (QI, the other guests are Phill Jupitus and Sue Perkins, because it's a Musical Episode)

+ ST: TOS -- Chekov and Sulu both have posters.

+ Does Venom want one? And how!

A graphic with black text over stripes in the color of the aromantic pride flag. The text reads, Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week 2026 will be from February 15 to 21! To celebrate, we are thrilled to announce an itch.io bundle of works starring aromantic characters. Who is contributing? Maybe YOU! Visit our sign-up form to read all the details and rules and to submit your works with aromantic main characters for inclusion in the bundle!

Are you a creator who sells works on itch.io? Have you created and now sell a work starring one or more characters on the aromantic spectrum?

Then we want YOU! to submit your works to a bundle of itch.io works (books! comics! games! zines!) starring aromantic spectrum characters that we will run during Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week in February, 2026! Duck Prints Press is run by an aroace agender person, unforth/Claire Houck, and we work with many aromantic creators and have published multiple works featuring aromantic characters. We’re looking to celebrate Aromantic Spectrum Awareness week by (among other things) organizing, running, and promoting a bundle of stories featuring aromantic characters on itch.io!

Sign-ups are open until either January 14th or until we hit 50 sign-ups, so check it out now if you’re interested and don’t wait! Visit our sign-up form to read all the details and rules.

We hope you’ll join the bundle and help us get lots of works starring aromantic characters into the hands of readers, players, and viewers!

Rules, for perusal by folks who don’t feel like clicking through:

  1. The bundle will run the duration of Arospec Week, from February 15th to the 21st.
  2. This bundle is open to books, stories, comics, graphic novels, games, art, and any other work on itch.io that meets the requirements that follow.
  3. Works must feature one or more aromantic main characters.
  4. Creators do not need to be aromantic, but it’s definitely be a plus!
  5. One work per creator, please (if, like me, you run a single itch.io account that includes the work of multiple creators, you may submit multiple works, but still only one per creator!).
  6. NSFW works welcome, as long as they are within itch.io’s Terms of Service.
  7. Absolutely no generative AI creations are allowed.
  8. The final cost of the bundle and the proceed share per creator will depend how many works are submitted; I will aim for a cost no lower than $1 per work in the bundle, with revenue shared equally per itch.io account (as in – even if someplace like Duck Prints Press submits multiple works, those places will not get a larger share). If shares cannot be divided evenly, I will use random.org to randomly select who will be at the higher share and who at the lower; all shares will be within 1% of each other.
  9. This sign-up form will be open either until January 14 2026 or until I hit 50 sign-ups, whichever comes first.
  10. All contributors must post at least one promotion post on their own social media account(s) during the week when the bundle is available. Anyone who doesn’t do so will be banned from joining into future itch.io bundles that Duck Prints Press makes.
  11. By joining, you consent to me using the e-mail address you provide to contact you on matters related to the bundle.
  12. We will put together and send out promotional graphics using covers that participants provide. You are also welcome and encouraged to make your own graphics.

Mount TBR 2025 Book #09 The Village Teacher
The Village Teacher by Liu Cixin [Graphic Novel by Zhang Xiaoyu]

Li Laoshi spends his whole life teaching and protecting the youth in a remote Chinese village. What for?

I read the German edition of the graphic novel version of Liu Cixin's novella. Same as last year, I needed to add a graphic novel to gain time for my challenge. It's cheating in a way, but just like last year, this graphic novel was a Christmas present that I would not otherwise have read, so it's predestined to be used for the Mount TBR challenge, and I don't feel very bad about it. (Not to mention that no amount of cheating will make me reach my goal of 12 books this year.)

some thoughts, spoilery

* The graphics style is very detailed and the aliens and starscapes especially are beautiful. The humans are a little ugly in comparison - but that's the point, I think.

* The whole point of the book is to show how much good teachers are worth. They'll save Earth from destruction.

* That the Earth is saved by a few youngsters spouting physical formulas (Kepler's laws) without understanding them is hilariously Chinese. (And maybe also the point.)

* The two things that stuck in my mind from this book:

** the idea that anyone could at any time be chosen by an alien race as a representative for Earth's population. This would not go well. (But hey, even choosing Chinese students from a backwater village seems to have been enough. Is there hope? :) )

** the fact that even with government support, the teacher wasn't able to pay for his cancer treatment

* It's, from what I've now seen, a pretty typical book for Liu Cixin. He puts his finger on systemic failures of Chinese society, and he invents fantastical alien races. Two for two.

* The moral of the story isn't even bad, knowledge is important, teachers are important. It's okay for a short story.

* I read the whole thing in under an hour, so I'm not surprised that the moral didn't leave a huge impression. It didn't have enough time to develop.

3 stars - very detailed artwork, the human faces a bit too (intentionally) ugly in places to really draw me in, but the novella plot was good

International Volunteer Day

[syndicated profile] ao3_news_feed

International Volunteer Day

On December 5, people all over the world observed International Volunteer Day (IVD) to acknowledge the work of volunteer workers everywhere, and their efforts, dedication, and passion. Since its conception in 1985, IVD has invited us to recognize the ways in which volunteers contribute to communities and are at the forefront of many people-led initiatives.

Here at the Organisation of Transformative Works (OTW) we depend entirely on that drive, as our organization is 100% volunteer-run! Our volunteers handle our strategic planning, administration, infrastructure, development, any day-to-day tasks required in running a non-profit organization, and so on. Volunteers aren't just the backbone of the OTW, they are its whole skeleton!

Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of an OTW volunteer looks like? The answer is: It's hard to say! Depending on where in the OTW they are active, their tasks and responsibilities can look very different from those of the next volunteer. Volunteers also work a very wide range of weekly hours, depending on their position(s) and availability: anything from one hour to over twenty hours a week!

For this IVD, we wanted to give you a chance to get to know those volunteers behind the scenes of the OTW and its projects. That is why we sent out a call across our social media for you to send us your most burning questions.

Here are some of those questions with answers from our volunteers!

Questions for Specific Committees

  • Question for the Policy & Abuse committee:
How often do you deal with people who want to censor something on AO3? Is it a common complaint?
    Committee Answer:
AO3 frequently receives complaints about "offensive content", which includes suggesting that we should remove or censor content that is allowed on AO3. In the past five years, complaints about offensive content have consistently been one of the top three types of Policy & Abuse tickets, albeit not the largest. The Policy & Abuse committee regularly publishes a breakdown of the previous year's tickets, which for 2024 can be found here. Information about 2025's tickets will be available in a newsletter early next year.
  • Question for the Volunteers & Recruiting committee:
What types of things can be done by volunteers? I say this as someone who'd love to volunteer at some point in the future, but have no idea if I have any skill that would actually be helpful.
    Committee answer:
The skill sets required from our volunteers depend a lot on the role: There are roles that require some kind of formal education or in-depth knowledge of a specific topic, such as being a lawyer or a financial analyst. Other roles, however, are teaching all required skills during the training period, so for those roles it mostly depends on being the "type" for the role. For us in VolCom (Volunteers & Recruiting Committee), it's more of the latter than the former; for example, our volunteers need to enjoy documentation work and ticking off tasks from to-do lists while being able to do work autonomously. There are many roles in the OTW that look for a specific type of person more than a person with a specific set of skills, or the skills are very transferable: Skills such as project management, navigating tricky interpersonal situations, dividing big-picture goals into actionable items, etc. If you keep an eye on our socials and the news posts, you will see us recruiting regularly. Each role comes with a position description that explains both what the volunteers in this role do, and what is required of applicants, so just watch out for a role that matches your skills and interests!

General Questions across Committees

  • How many hours a week do you spend on your OTW volunteer work?
For myself on Systems, it varies. I usually spend at least an hour a day between checking in on alerts, tickets, and responding to any inquiries from other committees internally. It usually ends up being more, as some of those requests are more involved than others. Any time there's an outage or issue, the number of hours usually goes much higher. (FrostTheFox, Systems committee chair)
  • How do you manage your volunteer time, and do you do the same thing every day like with a day job?
What I do each day varies based on what events are coming up for Board and the OTW! We may be working on research projects, preparing for a public Board meeting, replying to questions from the public, or many other things. The variety is a huge part of why I enjoy what I do honestly. I wouldn't enjoy it as much if it was the same every day. Volunteering for the OTW is nice because by and large, you get to pick what ours and schedule you'd like to have. I personally try and block out sections of my time to work on OTW-related tasks and do occasional checking in outside of this time. (therealmorticia, Board Assistants Team committee chair)
  • What's your favorite part about volunteering at the OTW?
Assisting AO3 users, most notably Vietnamese and Chinese users, in my capacity as Support volunteer. Some weeks when the stress from my other OTW roles catches up to me, doing Support work and answering Support tickets remind me of the reason why I started this whole endeavour in the first place: I want to give back to fandom and help AO3 users navigate the Archive a little bit easier. (Anh Pham, Support committee)
  • What's the aspect of volunteer work with the OTW that you most wish more people knew about?
Sometimes the things you think will be simplest are the hardest, and vice versa. Personally, I've had to nix features I really wanted myself because they just wouldn't be practical given our volume of users and current resources. (Accessibility, Design, & Technology committee volunteer)
  • What does a typical day as an OTW volunteer looks like for you?
I volunteer as an Open Doors Administrative Volunteer and as an Open Doors Chair Assistant. Both are project management-oriented roles: I help manage archive imports and the committee itself! I start my volunteering time by checking on the status of my archives, answering questions as they arise, making sure archive import tasks are progressing along - it's always something different! I also work on various projects for committee management, such as documenting workflows and new procedures or running weekly working meetings. (Kayla, Open Doors committee)
  • What is your favorite animal? Alternatively, do you have a favorite breed of cat/dog?
Aside from cats & dogs, my favorite animal is a sloth. They’re mood and they sound really funny (look it up on youtube!). Favorite dog breed is airedale terrier, because my boyfriend has one and she’s hilarious. She lives with his mom now that he’s studying/working in my city, and I’ve only seen her a few times, so I’m convinced she thinks I’m some sort of weird extension of my bf that just randomly appears every 6 months or so. (kati, Translation committee)
  • Do you enjoy reading fanfic? If so, what's your favorite work on AO3?
I do! Finding a favorite was the hardest thing I've ever done and I had to dig through my bookmarks, anything by author hanville would make the cut, to be honest, but my absolute favorite is mosaic broken hearts with this is me trying as a really, really close second. (Camila Lopez, Tag Wrangling committee)
  • Do you write any fanfic yourself? What do you enjoy about it?
I write so many fics. @.@ It's a lot of fun to explore favourite characters in new ways, and to get to expand the worlds in which they live. I'm also cursed to have very few fandoms in which my favourite characters or ships have a lot of content, so I end up having to make it all myself. (Fun fact: I actually found my partner due to a rare pair!) (C, AO3 Documentation committee)
  • What fandoms are you (currently) in?
Well, Heated Rivalry obviously. I'm also really into Fallout, The Pitt, and Formula 1 RPF. (I'm not even a sports person. I don't know how I ended up in sports RPF, yet here I am.) (Whatsit, Policy & Abuse committee)
  • Do you feel glad or proud to see fanfiction in your mother tongue? I grew up in German fandom, and I owe some German fandom writers a lot when it comes to my own existence in fandom. I very much stay away from it now lmao. I can't handle anything remotely smutty written in German, and some peculiarities of fanfiction that I can tolerate in English are a dealbreaker in German, as well as grammar and punctuation. I do love that it exists - fanfiction and fandom in general is an amazing space that should not be limited by the language one speaks. (corr, Volunteers & Recruiting committee)

(For more answers from our volunteers, check out this work on AO3, where we'll post additional replies to each question!)

We are exceedingly grateful to all volunteers who have taken time out of their day to compose answers, and for the amazing work they do at the OTW on a daily basis! They are the lifeblood of the OTW, AO3, and our other projects!

If you too want to become part of the OTW and help out as a volunteer, keep an eye on our recruitment posts! And if you're afraid of missing a post, no worries: You can subscribe to our monthly OTW News by Email service for a neat summary of what's currently happening at the OTW!

Here are some Yuletide recs, sorted for your reading pleasure by whether or not you need to know the canon.

Do Not Need to Know Canon

Chalion/World of the Five Gods - Lois McMaster Bujold

a knock at your front door. I think all you need to know to read this story is that there are five Gods - the Mother, the Father, the Son, the Daughter, and the Bastard - who are definitely real but rarely interfere in human affairs. They can, however, make people saints - able to do limited miracles - if they need to. This story deals with the Father, the God least-explored in canon, and is set in modern-day Chalion. It's got a clever look at what modern Chalion might be like, a very likable main character, and some beautiful writing.

FAQ: The "Snake Fight" Portion of Your Thesis Defense - Luke Burns

If you've never read the canon, I've linked it above. It's extremely short and you will be glad you did. There are other "Snake Fight" stories and they're all fun.

Snake Logistics for Spring Defenses. Some students are just begging for a black mamba.

Need to Know Canon

Dragonriders of Pern - Anne McCaffrey

find the true. Mirrim and F'lar have a chat at a Gather. I enjoyed this conversation between two characters who I don't think ever exchange words in canon. Good characterization, good atmosphere.

Earthsea - Ursula K. Le Guin

to be useful, if not free. My gift! A backstory/canon diverge AU for Serret, the enchantress in A Wizard of Earthsea. Beautifully written, beautifully structured.

The Long Walk - Stephen King

There's No Discharge in the War. Stebbins in a time loop. Long, intense, often horrifying, sometimes very moving, and cleverly constructed story about Stebbins and the other Walkers.

"The Lottery" - Shirley Jackson; New Yorker RPF

Why one small American town won’t stop stoning its residents to death. Isaac Chotiner interviews the guy who runs the lottery in Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." If you've never heard of him, he's a journalist who's very good at letting people hang themselves with their own words. The story is dead-on, hilarious, and chilling.

Lyra series/Caught in Crystal - Patricia Wrede

Three Things That Might Have Happened to Kayl Larrinar. My treat! A very satisfyingly bittersweet canon divergence AU for Kayl's Star Cluster, full of camaraderie and atmosphere.

Mushishi

I want to taste the shadows, too. A lovely little casefic/character study about Adashino, the guy who collects mushi-related stuff. It really feels like an episode of the anime, especially the final portion.

Some Like It Hot

Anchors Away. A short and very sweet post-movie coda.

Watership Down - Richard Adams

There is no bargain. Five encounters with The Black Rabbit of Inlé. An exploration of how the Black Rabbit is different things to different rabbits in different circumstances, very well-done, sometimes moving, sometimes chilling. The Black Rabbit is Death, so warning for rabbit death.

What have you enjoyed in the collection?

arguably this can't be generalized to the whole genre of fantasy because today's subject is only a branch of that, but i think there's a lot to be said about historical fantasy as you see it in manhwas/gas. for those unfamiliar, there's a lot of webcomics and webnovels that circulate around which are generally women-targeted. i can't recall if i've ever posted about those here, but i think about them all the time and i love doing trope dissections with them in mind.

some key aspects of these sorts of works are usually a monarchy, some sort of magic-based societal hierarchy, some religious institution, and some blend between the medieval prioritization of local lords over the land's "king" and renaissance-typical advances in art and architecture. naturally, these romances tend to fall into wish fulfillment and don't prioritize historical accuracy (which, in fairness, is hard to consider anyway when you're also dealing with magic, as i've detailed in my previous post surrounding the conditions of the world in a magical setting). however, i still think there are interesting things to consider about this. number one is that, when working with a historical setting like that (and admittedly today as well), there will always be a degree of exploitation baked into the story. it's most obvious when looking at a historical setting because, well, serfs exist. some rofans tend to ignore the existence of serfdom as a facet of european history. that's okay, but even then, there's still this perpetual group of peasants who buzz about in the background, dressed in drab clothing. that's the undeniable fact, and so the next question is: does that matter? like i've said, even anything in a modern setting will have the capitalism-typical exploitation of workers and miserable working conditions, and there's not really a shortage of stories that surround high-profile businessmen falling in love. sure. the case i'd like to make regarding why rofan and isekai are special is that the female protagonist will often be set up as some sort of angel. not literally (most times), but there'll always be an aspect where you're meant to praise the main character for their altruism. i don't mind this either; when you're dealing with a story fundamentally built around wish-fulfillment and which is marketed to romance enjoyers, i think it's mainly natural to want your main character to be of some moral superiority. i think that the setting undermines this, though. as established before, there's prominent serfdom, or at the very least a prominent inequality, that doesn't ever and can't ever be resolved in a rofan manhwa because a fundamental selling point of the genre is its luxury and its impermeability to the regular joe. this is even acknowledged through the isekai portion: the people who get transported to a new world are never at the top of the socioeconomic food chain. they're wage slaves, and this is naturally intentional and meant to feed into the luxury of the world they then are transported to. like most of my posts that revolve tropes and their mechanics, there's not much i have to say regarding what happens next. nobody's going to stop wanting their main character to be portrayed as an angelic giving person just because i'm suggesting that there's further exploitation that goes unacknowledged in the work. i don't mind that, either, but something that does genuinely tickle me is when the main character is said to want to change the system; things like feminism will go acknowledged without any attention paid towards the intersectionality of feminism and classism.

on the subject of misogyny as well, there's another interesting part of fantasy romances to me, which is that the female main character will, basically without fail, always be of a lower standing than the male lead. admittedly, many of these stories and webnovels are written by women, so it's not as though it's an intentionally insidious move meant to make the case that men are always superior to women. nor is it a case of critique wherein the easier access of men to these higher positions is called to attention. it's a facet of the genre, and ties back into the basic idea that outlines every creative's work: wish fulfillment. i still think that there's something of interest within that guideline, though. as in, even within their fantasies, it almost seems to be an incredulous thing that a woman can reach such a high standing of her own ability (ridiculous thing to say within such a bloodline-dictated setting) that i think reflects on the actual society in south korea especially a lot, given sk's rampant and dire misogyny. while i don't think that any of this is intentionally touting misogynistic ideals and that a large portion of it is simply wish-fulfillment in having a handsome guy save you from a miserable reality, i think that it's undeniable that a lot of it is baked on a misogynistic premise.

onto religion. this is a more varied thing; a common similarity is that all of the religious organizations are vaguely christian (more specifically catholic, given the kind of luxury you see in churches that's less fitting of the protestant-style utilitarian nature). the prominence in society, relation to the main character, and nature of the church (as good [usually] or evil [less likely, but still exists]) tend to vary a lot. if i spoke too much on this, the post would dip away from the rofan/isekai subject matter into a discussion on christianity in general (about which i'm decidedly less versed in), but i do have a few pennies to offer regarding this matter. the first is that, in a classically religious manner, there's an upsetting amount of purity culture being touted. lots of protagonists in a religious story will eventually bear the moniker of saintess, and i'm kind of irked by these stories because i dislike the fixation of a woman's so-called purity and moral virtuousness (which, i mean, i guess is a fixture of christianity). that's one thing i dislike. the other thing i dislike is that this is a really odd part of a magical society. aside from the typical questions of how magic exists in the first place and is regulated, i think the existence of a church with such prominence becomes something to question. how does faith play a role with the existence of magic? is it something credited to their god? i'd be interested in the mechanisms of that, but most of the time, it seems to be something that coexists without much interrogation, which bores me, frankly.

this is more abrupt and fits more earlier in the post, but i also like that a facet of the setting is that main characters tend to be categorized as a villainess. this is a secondary reason to why i think the fixation on morality (from earlier, with the serfdom & peasant discussion) is so funny. the way stories are set up, with having the original character be a villainess (often misunderstood, but the villainess title holds nonetheless), there is almost a trope-dictated necessity for the protagonist to then be really morally good. there's a contrast inherently set up and expected in these sorts of cases: the original person was a villain, so naturally the protagonist has to shine and be better in response. that's my little tidbit, at least. there are a lot more aspects to rofans & isekais that i like to mull over, so consider this a part one. i just think that it's always so fun to see the way subjects like classism and misogyny will bleed into the fiction that surrounds us.
